Fashism Saved My Ego

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

What do you do when you’re out shopping – alone – and you just can’t decide if those jeans make your butt look big or just good and you start asking anyone who’s in the dressing room, including the 300 pound woman with the leggings ? Or, you’re getting ready for a party, you ask your partner how a particular dress looks, and he says, “It looks fine” or “I don’t know; it looks alright”? Like, he thinks that’s helpful?

It’s a dilemma,  especially at this age, when things that looked great on us in 1980 now look (more…)

Car Talk

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

When we were younger and living at home it was almost impossible to have a private conversation, one of those “deep” ones where you really let the other person see the real you. One reason was that it was hard not to be overheard by at least one family member. The other was, you were virtually never allowed to be alone with someone of the opposite sex, without some prying adult nearby.

So, why is it still so hard now, even with our own homes and thousands of ways to communicate, to find a place to just talk? (more…)

Feelin’ Groovy and Talkin’ Teen

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

I’ve written about those of us who dress like 20 year olds, thinking it makes us look younger. It doesn’t. Now I want to talk about something more subtle: language.

Remember when “groovy” was. . . groovy? Back in the late 60’s, we said things like “bummed out” and “cool” and we would “freak out” if our parents tried to co-opt our slang. Not only did it make us crazy, it made them sound pathetic.

So, when we hear newscasters talking about “bling” (more…)

OCD? Y-E-S

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Remember Monica from “Friends”? How she’s so obsessive, competitive and bossy? Know anyone like that? I do.

Me.

Maybe I’m not as bad as Monica (I’m certainly not as “tidy”). But I could give her a run for her money. I wonder sometimes if more of you out there have these same obsessive/compulsive tendencies and (more…)
