If your post-Thanksgiving meals were like mine, one topic dominated conversations around the dinner table. I’m not talking about the conversation about Aunt Martha’s lousy pumpkin pie, or grandpa’s personal hygiene problem. I’m confident most of us were talking about that small car accident that took place early Friday morning in Florida. Unless you were forking down cranberry sauce on Mars, the facts surrounding the event, and the resulting fallout, are well-known. What has been most revealing has been how this has become what could be called a “teachable moment.”
My first “teachable moment” involved my mother, who at 80 years old is still the wisest person I know. (more…)

The book we’ve all been waiting for is finally out, and what better way to show the special someone how you love them during this holiday season than a copy of the Thrilla from Wasilla’s 400-page pimp slap of John McCain, Katie Couric, the father of her daughter’s child (Ricky Hollywood!), Barack Obama and, of course, the liberal media.

There are still occupations where men will always dominate, but they are shrinking. One factor that has made recent economic times different is that other male-dominated industries, like financial services, have been hit hard. A recent study released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics points out the high jobless rate for men over 45, with slim prospect of those jobs coming back. (more…)

I know I’ve been tardy with my posts. We had a great family vacation, and are in the final stages of a kitchen renovation that has disrupted our lives for much of the summer. I was working on another posting, but the events of the past 24 hours regarding basketball coach Rick Pitino adds another chapter to a previous post that generated a number of interesting comments.
For those of you who don’t know the particulars: back in April, Louisville University basketball coach Rick Pitino was accused of raping the wife of the basketball team equipment manager. Pitino responded by accusing the woman of extortion, saying she had demanded 10 million dollars to drop the rape charges. The mainstream sporting press, overwhelmingly white, male, and middle aged, came to Pitino’s defense and labeled the accuser as a vengeful, slightly unbalanced woman. (more…)
