Women who don’t normally spend a lot of time in the kitchen still sometimes find themselves walking the grocery store aisles. Which leads me to this burning question: what idiot decides which products go in each aisle?

Girls follow the rules. Boys don’t. When you were a kid, following the rules meant you’d be rewarded . . . I think they called it being a “teacher’s pet”. Growing up, we women over 40 were praised for being “little ladies” while those bad, bad boys had to stay after school. But, boys played sports so they had coaches, and when you play sports you’re taught to break rules – as long as you can get away with it – because the most important thing is winning. Just ask Joe Paterno. (more…)

Halloween happened and now I’m sad. I’m sad because it’s over. Why can’t we have a week of Halloween? You spend so much time preparing – designing your costume, figuring out your makeup and accessories – that it’s gone before you know it. What’s that you say? You don’t dress up for Halloween? Are you kidding? How can it be that you’re willing to forgo something you loved as a kid just because you’re now a woman (or man) over 40? Here’s what I think: you think it makes you seem immature, right? Well, grow up. There is nothing immature about making believe. Isn’t that exactly what (more…)

Is there anything more boring than baseball? I truly doubt it. Maybe you didn’t have to listen to baseball non-stop when you were a kid, forced to keep quiet on the weekly one hour drive to Jersey City while your father listened intently to the play by play and cursed the missed catches, strike outs and bad calls. My dad, Ang was actually more entertaining than the pontificating sportscasters who filled in the interminable dead time between the rare excitement of a hit with even deader time. You know, even writing about this is boring me. Which brings me to my point: why are we subjected to baseball (and every other possible sport) when we go out to eat? (more…)

Twenty years ago you couldn’t say “Coke” without making someone snicker and picture pubic hair on a Coke can. Yes, it’s been two decades since Anita Hill was dragged through the mud for coming forward with her story of sexual harassment and Clarence Thomas was confirmed to a lifetime position on the Supreme Court, despite Anita’s testimony about his perverse nature (much of which has since been independently confirmed). Wherever you stand on that piece of history may be colored by your own history: if you’ve been a victim of harassment (and I’m going to guess most women over 40 have been at one time or another) or if you’re a harasser yourself. . . (more…)
