HSAM or Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory is the unique ability to remember virtually everything from every day in your life. I’m convinced that I have at least a version of this because I never, ever forget. Not the words to cartoon theme songs from the 1960s. Not what you said to me on the first day of school. Yup. I remember it all. . . well, most. And I may seem to forgive you. . . But, believe me. I do not forget.

You cannot judge a book by its cover. Sometimes those old sayings make a lot of sense. Maybe not the ones my father used to say, like “You sound like a girl with a paper asshole.” But the ones you’ve heard so often that you don’t know what they mean anymore. So you misquote them. My late friend Diann will claim that “He ran around with his head cut off,” leaving out the “like a chicken with. . . ” part. Which always gave me a chuckle. And my friend Lori says “It’s a doggy dog world.” Which, if you come to my house, might be true. But the older I get (and I’m well beyond being a woman over 40), the more I understand why you truly cannot judge any book by it’s cover. Except maybe romance novels.

Gossip, gossip, gossip. It’s what girls do, right? Wrong. Just like the inaccurate “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” (remember which gender usually says “If I can’t have her, nobody will”), there is the equally inaccurate “gossip like an old lady”. Who gossips more than anyone? Men do. But they call it “sports talk”. (more…)

Why is it so hard for some people to give the little wave? I mean, if I’m willing to let you in, at the very least, give me the little wave. I always get one from women over 40. But 20 somethings? (more…)

When we were younger and living at home it was almost impossible to have a private conversation, one of those “deep” ones where you really let the other person see the real you. One reason was that it was hard not to be overheard by at least one family member. The other was, you were virtually never allowed to be alone with someone of the opposite sex, without some prying adult nearby.
So, why is it still so hard now, even with our own homes and thousands of ways to communicate, to find a place to just talk? (more…)
