We're (way) over 40. Deal with it.

I’m a control freak, so lots of things drive me nuts: people who mispronounce “vulnerable” (leaving out the “l”), bald guys who do the comb over and people who misquote cliches (“It’s a doggy dog world”). But what really sets me off is women – successful, intelligent women – who are afraid to drive. (more…)

Remember the good old days when people actually talked about “Women’s Liberation”? Sure, we still hear about libbers, but for the most part, everyone – men in particular – thinks equal rights for women is an antiquated notion because women have all the advantages anyway. (I can just see the guys nodding and the women rolling their eyes.)
Yes, most men (and plenty of women) believe that inequality between the sexes is a thing of the past Sure, in 1967 men earned 167.5% more than women. . . but didn’t they deserve it? (more…)

Let me warn you upfront: this post is not going to be funny or entertaining. It’s going to be a confession.
Every time I read about 15 year old Phoebe Prince, the girl who could no longer face the harassment, taunting, threats and stalking and took her own life, it makes me cry – and cringe. I realize how easy it is to become one of those bullies, because I was one once, too. (more…)

I am tired of sluts. No, not the Tiger-Woods-John-Edwards type of slut. I mean emotional sluts. The kind of people who share their most intimate secrets at the drop of a hat.
Why rail against them, you might ask? They harm no one. They’re entertaining. And they make us feel better about our own lives, right? Wrong. What they do is turn you into a slut, too. Didn’t your mother warn you against hanging around with “fast” girls? Not only would you get a reputation (which, come to think of it, would probably get you a lot of dates); you’d also become loose yourself (and subject to catch something really vile). And she was right. Hanging out with emotional sluts will turn you into one, too, before you know it. (more…)

Super glue. A comb. Matches. A sample pack of Motrin IB. A first aid kit with needle and thread. Four miscellaneous gift cards with varying amounts left. Two more Motrin packs. A teeny weeny screwdriver. A flashlight keychain. A really good pen. A lighter and matches. A flash drive/power link. A pocketbook hanger. Contact lens case. A crumpled dollar bill. And a covered elastic.
All this. . . and that’s just the zipper part of my pocketbook.
Why do I feel compelled to keep so much junk so close at hand? (more…)
