If you’ve ever watched one of those shows about hoarders, you know how unbelievably disgusting hoarding can be. I know first hand. No, not from Gary (though I do believe he still has 15 years of Modern Drummer hidden somewhere in the attic). I’m talking about Mrs Hoffman, the old woman who lived next door when I was growing up. And when I say “hoarder” I mean someone who had newspapers piled several feet high on every single surface, magazines from the 1930s – and held on to a plate of food from our Christmas dinner through January. Yuck.
But this isn’t about the revolting stuff hard-core hoarders keep. It’s about the secret hoarding going on in everyone’s life. Yes; you, my friend. You are a hoarder. (more…)

I can’t throw out old makeup. That’s it. No clever pun, no witty double entendre to make you snicker. I’m just admitting I can’t throw out old makeup.
Sure, if a compact falls on the ground and the powder splinters into a million shards, then I’ll dump it – only because it can’t be salvaged. But why, tell me why, I cannot discard the dozens of tubes of lipstick that I will never wear?
It isn’t just because I’m a hoarder (though not the piles of newspapers, dead animals under the bed type), because I can go through my closet and donate scads of clothes throughout the year (which gives me a great justification for buying more). It’s deeper, more esoteric than that. (more…)

For the past three weeks or so I’ve been vigorously planning my high school reunion (which is my way of an explanation as to why I haven’t blogged). Besides getting some very unsolicited information from class members I reached by phone (like how DH’s old friend hoards gold coins and lost his wife because he wouldn’t use them on a down payment on a house), I’ve discovered that I’m not alone in hoarding things from the past (though, as you might remember, I did finally manage to throw out my old Xerox job appraisals from the late 90s. . . ).
But I’m happy to report that some people are even worse than I am. (more…)
