Going to Hell in a Handbag

Would you walk into a store and steal a dress if you knew you wouldn’t get caught? How about if some sleazy character ran up to you on a side street in NYC and offered you a diamond tennis bracelet dirt cheap (as a burglar alarm sounded around the block)? What about taking money out of your friend’s bag when her back was turned?
I’m assuming most of you would answer “no” to all of the above (with some unfortunate exceptions, perhaps). But, if you’ve answered no, than here is my real question for you: why do you buy counterfeit handbags? (more…)

In Order to Form a More Perfect Market

The Supreme Court just decided that corporations are people, too; that every corporation is entitled to the same First Amendment rights as any American citizen. In this case, it was about freedom of speech. Now, I think we all agree that companies can say whatever they want (with the caveat that anything in their advertising has to be true. . . or no one else can prove it isn’t). (more…)

The Envelope, Please

It’s that time of the year, when we start hearing about all the award winners: the Golden Globes, the Grammys, the Oscars, the Peoples’ Choice (as if we care). I am starting a new tradition: awards for the best and worst bosses: the Tommys and the Libbys, named after my worst and best bosses.
Since this is the first year of a sure-to-be-trendsetting event, I am going to give out lifetime “achievement” awards in several categories. Of course, some names will be changed, to protect the guilty (and my future career), though I’m certain my former co-workers will know exactly who I am talking about. (more…)

The Unholy Trinity

There are three types of women: Drama Queens (think Glen Close in Fatal Attraction), Blinders (What do you mean, he’s married???) and Normals. Most of us probably think we’re Normals, but I’d venture to guess that at least a few of us are Drama Queens and probably most are Blinders.
