We're (way) over 40. Deal with it.

If you’re a woman – or a man – over 40, you’ve hopefully embraced the latest technologies so that you aren’t completely cut off from the rest of the world. Hell, my 91 year old mother goes online to email and play Scrabble. But whether or not you’re comfortable with technology, we all have to deal with everyone else . . . who is. And that means being ignored for a smart phone.

When we were younger and living at home it was almost impossible to have a private conversation, one of those “deep” ones where you really let the other person see the real you. One reason was that it was hard not to be overheard by at least one family member. The other was, you were virtually never allowed to be alone with someone of the opposite sex, without some prying adult nearby.
So, why is it still so hard now, even with our own homes and thousands of ways to communicate, to find a place to just talk? (more…)

What is it with people and texting? Yes, I do it sometimes (like when I’m voting for my favorite American Idol), but unless you’re communicating with your kid, my advice is to think twice – and then, don’t do it.
Yes, texting is easy. It’s convenient. It’s free. Oh; that’s right: it’s not free. Which is reason one to cut it out. A lot of people do not want to pay to get your inane messages. I had to go and change my cell phone plan to a more expensive one simply because the texting charges were adding up. Thanks, folks! (more…)
