Beyond Babedom

We're (way) over 40. Deal with it.

Brett Favre or Martha Stewart?

The first boy I had a crush onĀ  (not counting my imaginary friend, George) was Paul Esposito. In the third grade, Paul pulled my hair, chased me from the school, and when he caught up, kissed me. He warned me not to tell anyone – which I, of course, did – and he vociferously denied it forevermore. That was my first infatuation (which lasted about 25 years, but that’s another story) and it didn’t end well.

Okay; it didn’t end that badly. We went to a girl-ask-boy dance in the 8th grade and kind of hung out together in high school, but it still was unrequited love.

Which makes me think about the timeline of our attraction to the opposite sex. Read the rest of this entry »

In the Eye of the Beholder

I’ve been wearing makeup – not counting the cheapo mascara I bought for about $.25 from W.T. Grant’s in high school – since about 1975, when I graduated from college and started working in NYC. I literally had to start from scratch, counting on those Estee Lauder “purchase with purchase” specials, to fill my coffers. Back then, quality makeup cost the same everywhere, so it was an opportunity to shop at Bergdorf Goodman and Bonwit Teller. How chic!

But my question is this: after wearing makeup for over 35 years, am I the only one who still feels like she doesn’t know how to apply eye makeup? Read the rest of this entry »

Organ size is determined by p53 protein

In studies conducted on the fruit fly, researchers have revealed that when some specific cellsĀ  are subjected to stress, not only is the growth of this part of the organ reduced but also that of the remaining section.

This is obviously a very, very serious problem. Not only could this increase the need for rolled up socks in the pants; it also can have a very detrimental affect on the egos of those poor men in our lives (who run the world and make most of the money). Read the rest of this entry »

You Can’t Always Get What You Want – Luckily

You read lots of stories about people’s dreams being fulfilled, but I always want to know about the things we think will make us happy, but really won’t.

Sure, Barbra Streisand probably loves the money she makes, but she obviously isn’t having much fun with it, living in seclusion and hiding from her fans. And you can bet Princess Di rued the day she became royalty, though who wouldn’t wish for that? But, bringing it back to me (which is really what I always do, no?), I’ve been thinking about the things I wanted, growing up; the things I thought would make me happy. Read the rest of this entry »

A Control Freak Christmas

So many people really enjoy celebrating Christmas. I’m one of them. I literally have 22 boxes of decorations that I begin putting up right after Thanksgiving as well as a ton of traditions I like to repeat, year after year. Some things, however, never make it past year one. And it’s because I’m a Christmas Control Freak.
