Beyond Babedom

We're (way) over 40. Deal with it.

Hit Me With Your Best Shot

Guys hit. But girls hit where it really hurts. . . in the feelings. And sometimes, when you’ve been hit over and over it’s hard not to hit someone else, even if they had nothing to do with your pain.

Or, maybe you’re just a bitch. Yes. I used the B word. Why? Because some women really are B-I-T-C-H-E-S. I know. I’ve met a few of them. They love to put other women down. They find fault in others that they truly can’t see in themselves. And they undermine, attack, lie. . . makes you wonder why they aren’t more successful in business, doesn’t it? But, of course, men who have these traits aren’t called bitches. They are called Masters of the Universe.

But back to the female version. I know that girls tend to be less physical when they attack. Maybe it’s because we grew up being told that it isn’t ladylike. Maybe we learned from our older brothers who were stronger and we knew we couldn’t beat physically. Or maybe it’s because using our wits is so much more effective.

We were told at an early age that “sticks and stones” are what we should be worried about but we learned pretty darn fast that names will  hurt you. Why do you think slut shaming is so effective? We know that once something is alleged, it’s awfully  hard to disprove it. And even harder to make people forget it. Heck. who among us hasn’t unfairly been called a liar, a cheater, an exaggerator? I’ve heard that a million times (okay. . . couldn’t resist).

And, with social media, it’s soooo easy to accuse anyone of anything. Heck, what else is Facebook for, other than pictures of your offspring and meals?

Maybe growing up dealing with all those slings and arrows really does make the female sex stronger. We’re used to it. Not only did we hear it from other girls growing up, but we get attacked throughout life. If we’re successful businesswomen, we’re called called ball breakers or bossy (while our male counterparts are  “strong leaders “or “stern taskmasters”). When we express emotions we’re either hormonal or drama queens. Even the insults used for men are female based (douche bag, for example) or they are insulted by simply being called “ladies” or “girls.”

Just remember the comment, falsely attributed to Betty White: Why do people say “grow some balls”? Balls are weak and sensitive! If you really wanna get tough, grow a vagina! Those things take a pounding!

  1. Judy Herring says:

I think maturity has a lot to do with how us girls handle things. I’ve seen real hard core catty behavior amongst younger girls, teens through 20’s.My mother would be 97 and she was raised by a generation that taught her to “love and obey”. But, she raised me to be stronger partly because she raised me by herself. I have tried to raise my daughters to be self confident. So, I think a lot of how women act depends their surroundings growing up. I think a strong, confident female can be a threat to a lot of men, too.
