We're (way) over 40. Deal with it.

If you’ve ever watched one of those shows about hoarders, you know how unbelievably disgusting hoarding can be. I know first hand. No, not from Gary (though I do believe he still has 15 years of Modern Drummer hidden somewhere in the attic). I’m talking about Mrs Hoffman, the old woman who lived next door when I was growing up. And when I say “hoarder” I mean someone who had newspapers piled several feet high on every single surface, magazines from the 1930s – and held on to a plate of food from our Christmas dinner through January. Yuck.
But this isn’t about the revolting stuff hard-core hoarders keep. It’s about the secret hoarding going on in everyone’s life. Yes; you, my friend. You are a hoarder. (more…)

Okay; the chambermaid who accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn is a liar. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t rape her. And here’s the upshot: other rape victims – once again – face the “She made it up” crowd, who like to claim that these women asked for it, they wanted it, or it didn’t even happen. Yes, some women lie about being raped, but lots of us (yes, US) didn’t and haven’t and wouldn’t. Actually, most of us don’t even talk about it. (more…)

According to my sister Camille, it shouldn’t be you or I changing. But I don’t mean changing as in our attitudes, or weight or style. I mean giving exact change, as in digging in your purse for dimes, nickles, quarters, pennies. At least that’s what the book “How Not To Act Old” says. That’s the most sure-fire way – other than counting the rings on your neck – to let people know you’re over 40. (more…)

Now that Mothers’ Day is over and we have some time until Fathers’ Day, it’s time to reminisce about our parents in a not-so-rose-colored-glasses way. My friend Billy and I recently had a jolly good time discussing what “tools of discipline” our parents used on us. And I got to thinking: how many different ways did our parents beat us? (more…)

It might surprise women (and even men) over 40, but apparently the most popular birthday gift for 15 year-olds in Venezuela is breast enhancement. A boob job for a 15 year old? Unbelievable. I think I barely needed a bra by that age which I guess is why there’s such a big market for this misogynistic procedure.
Yeah, misogynistic. Because why do you think young girls feel they need huge breasts? (more…)
