Beyond Babedom

We're (way) over 40. Deal with it.

The Natural

Women are natural sellers. I came upon this realization recently – maybe during my orgy of Christmas movies (when Jennifer convinces Santa to let her ride in the sleigh and Ashley gets the rich, mean  store owner to let her redesign the toy department).  The ability to sell – both ideas and things – comes naturally to women and is probably what helps us maintain our sanity. Which is why we always get away with selling the Big Lie.

You may think of selling as a negative (e.g. “used car salesman”) but at some time or another, we all have to sell something. Not you, you say? “I hate selling,” you might protest. ” I just can’t.” Oh, really? So, you say you’ve never convinced your son to eat his vegetables? Or a cop to forgo giving you that speeding ticket? Or what about the Big Lie. . . you know, the one we’ve all told at least a couple of times . . . or maybe a couple thousand.

So, why do we “sell” that particular lie, over and over? Because you know you do. Or have. Or will. And it doesn’t matter how much you love him or how “great” he usually is. Or if anyone ever suggested that you do it. It just comes naturally (if you’ll pardon the pun). Oh, you can deny it all you want but nobody will believe you. Except your mate. They all do. Maybe because they want to be sold. Or their egos are too fragile. Which brings me back to – why do we do it? To save his ego. . . or simply for expediency?

If you’re shy, tell your Big Lie story using “Sally” as your name (or Eliane ala Seinfeld). Just include your email (which won’t show up here) and no one will be the wiser. As if they’d believe it, anyway.

I don’t know what you are talking about. Apparently any of the women that I’ve been with didn’t think it was even worth the effort to lie. Why lie when the duffus is just so grateful that you didn’t leave.
