Twenty years ago you couldn’t say “Coke” without making someone snicker and picture pubic hair on a Coke can. Yes, it’s been two decades since Anita Hill was dragged through the mud for coming forward with her story of sexual harassment and Clarence Thomas was confirmed to a lifetime position on the Supreme Court, despite Anita’s testimony about his perverse nature (much of which has since been independently confirmed). Wherever you stand on that piece of history may be colored by your own history: if you’ve been a victim of harassment (and I’m going to guess most women over 40 have been at one time or another) or if you’re a harasser yourself. . . The Supreme Court just decided that corporations are people, too; that every corporation is entitled to the same First Amendment rights as any American citizen. In this case, it was about freedom of speech. Now, I think we all agree that companies can say whatever they want (with the caveat that anything in their advertising has to be true. . . or no one else can prove it isn’t). (more…)

No matter what side of the political spectrum you’re on, I don’t see how the treatment of Judge Sonia Sotomayor can’t bug you, at least a little. Here is a woman who has spent 17 years on the bench – many more than any of the current Supreme Court justices – and yet she is being treated like some rank novice, questioned about why some lawyers who faced her have complained about her tough questioning and calling it a “lack of judicial temperament.”
Does anyone else see some barely veiled misogyny here? (more…)
