We're (way) over 40. Deal with it.

Gossip, gossip, gossip. It’s what girls do, right? Wrong. Just like the inaccurate “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” (remember which gender usually says “If I can’t have her, nobody will”), there is the equally inaccurate “gossip like an old lady”. Who gossips more than anyone? Men do. But they call it “sports talk”. (more…)

I don’t hate sports. Yes, I know many of my readers think I do, because I’ve railed against the high cost of college athletics, the public financing of sports arenas and so on. But I really like some sports. In fact, I spent Sunday afternoon watching the movie “Eddie” where Whoppie Goldberg – a rabid Knicks fan – gets the job as their head coach. Okay; not the same as watching a game, but the point is, I really enjoyed the basketball scenes and it made me remember all the bball games I’ve attended – and loved. Hey, I was a cheerleader for about 100 years. So, what’s my problem with sports? I don’t have one. My problem is with the culture of sports. And that is a whole ‘nother story. (more…)

Girls follow the rules. Boys don’t. When you were a kid, following the rules meant you’d be rewarded . . . I think they called it being a “teacher’s pet”. Growing up, we women over 40 were praised for being “little ladies” while those bad, bad boys had to stay after school. But, boys played sports so they had coaches, and when you play sports you’re taught to break rules – as long as you can get away with it – because the most important thing is winning. Just ask Joe Paterno. (more…)

Is there anything more boring than baseball? I truly doubt it. Maybe you didn’t have to listen to baseball non-stop when you were a kid, forced to keep quiet on the weekly one hour drive to Jersey City while your father listened intently to the play by play and cursed the missed catches, strike outs and bad calls. My dad, Ang was actually more entertaining than the pontificating sportscasters who filled in the interminable dead time between the rare excitement of a hit with even deader time. You know, even writing about this is boring me. Which brings me to my point: why are we subjected to baseball (and every other possible sport) when we go out to eat? (more…)

You think colleges are for providing higher education? Grow up. These days, their real job is to provide entertainment for the masses of sports fanatics and spend billions of dollars on coaches, stadiums and players. . . who, quite often, don’t graduate (or “pass” without ever having to go to class).
The numbers are ridiculous. Hundreds of millions are spent on new stadiums. The football coach at U.S.C. makes over $4 million a year while (more…)
