Remember Slam Books? If you don’t, let me enlighten you. A Slam Book was something many women over 40 have experienced in grammar school – usually a spiral notebook or a bunch of papers stapled together (oh, the world before Staples!) that dedicated a page to each person. When we were younger and living at home it was almost impossible to have a private conversation, one of those “deep” ones where you really let the other person see the real you. One reason was that it was hard not to be overheard by at least one family member. The other was, you were virtually never allowed to be alone with someone of the opposite sex, without some prying adult nearby.
So, why is it still so hard now, even with our own homes and thousands of ways to communicate, to find a place to just talk? (more…)

You know what really bothers me? The fact that women still change their names when they get married.
You may think this is a non issue. After all, isn’t that just common practice? Exactly my point. I really thought that with the advent of the women’s movement, most of us would keep out real names (which I refuse to call “maiden names”) vs. taking the “I no longer exist” Mrs. The only thing worse is (more…)
