We're (way) over 40. Deal with it.

When you were a kid, remember watching the Twilight Zone or Star Trek or the Jetsons and wondering if any of those cool gizmos they had would ever be invented? Some of them have been – like the universal translator and computers you can talk to – and others are deemed eminently possible by leading scientists – transponders!. So, it got me to thinking: what space age, futuristic gadget would I most like to see here and now? Transporter? Jet pack? Orgasmatron?

When you’re a kid, you always think “when I grow up, I’ll. . .” . . . fill in the blank. Once you’re older and working, then you start thinking, ” someday I want to. . .” Or later still “when I retire, I’ll. . .”. I started thinking the other day about how much longer I’ll be around. Yeah, a little morbid, but at 62 (yes! 62!) mortality is starting to look you in the eye. At most I can count on another 40 years – Grandma Lo Sapio lived to 103 – but realistically, I figure I’ve got maybe 20 good years before I’m too frail to do all those things I’ve been waiting to do, and another 10 to just hang around. So, what am I waiting for?

As I (and that means WE) get further and further beyond babedom, we all find things that we can no longer do. For some, it’s wearing 3 inch heels (not guilty – I still cannot wear flats). For others it’s dancing all night (guilty – and why do those hustle songs I used to love to dance to seem so fast now?). The list goes on and on (I still like to believe I could do a split if I wanted to . . . ) and I remind my 92 year old mom that she isn’t the only one who has had to give up stuff she used to like to do (Dolly decided for herself that driving was now out of the question. . . hallelujah!).
But now I’m realizing that there are things we can still do. . . we just should consider giving them up. And I say this out of love. . . for ourselves. (more…)

Every time I wander into a clothing store, I have to chuckle. Not because of the styles or the shoppers or even the prices (I shop at Marshall’s – no sticker shock). I marvel because no one is talking about inflation. And by inflation, I mean in the size of clothes. Or, maybe it makes more sense to call it “size deflation” because the older I get, the smaller my dress size becomes. (more…)

What exactly is a feminist? Do you know, or do you just have a visceral dislike of them/us? A lot of people think it’s a dirty word. But I’m going to give you a very accurate definition and I hope you’ll not only share it, but take it to heart as well. (more…)
