Beyond Babedom

We're (way) over 40. Deal with it.

Serenity Now. Insanity Later.

We all do it. We stress out over things we can’t control. And we obsess. And fret. And worry. Waiting for your mamo results. . . worrying if you got that job. . . reviewing in your mind, over and over, what you should have done differently in your relationship, your career, your family.  Now is the time for an easy solution.

The psychic stop button.

No, I’m not getting all New Age-y with you. I don’t think you can think your way out of problems. But I do believe there’s a right way of dealing with them. Think the  Staples “EASY” button, the one that you can hit when you need a solution. Except my button won’t give you the answer –  it will just give you the ability to stop. Yes; just stop, goddammit.

Stop wondering what you’re going to do IF. . .the doctor saw a spot. IF your boss thinks you’re incompetent and you get fired. IF your plane doesn’t land on time. Because you can’t do anything about it. Well, sure, you could do a better job and you could eat healthy and you could take an earlier flight. If you had a time machine. But you don’t. If you are worrying about things that have either already happened (I should have gone to college 12 years ago! I shouldn’t have told my sister she’s fat!) or about things that are simply out of your hands (Will the Yankees win the pennant? . . .), you need to use this button.

All the worrying in the world isn’t going to change the results of that diagnostic test (or all the praying, but that’s a subject for another day). If it’s done and it’s over and you’re just waiting for the results (or obsessively recollecting some past mistake, over and over), you need to hit the stop button.

It’s in your head. It’s already there. Trust me.

You will be amazed at how well it works. Thinking about the outcome of your dad’s surgery? STOP! Beating yourself up  over cutting your waist length hair? STOP! Wondering if that proposal you submitted was good enough/priced right/too long/too short? STOP!

I can hear you now: What good does that do? You think it’s that easy? What about. . . ?

Stop. Really. When you get the results from the doctor or hear back from the client, that is the time to deal with the situation. Not now, when there’s not a damn thing you can do about it. Accept the things you can’t change and you’ll be a lot happier.

Serenity now. Insanity later. It’s only a button away.

It’s not the easiest thing to train your mind to do. It’s called acceptance. Like the Serenity Prayer says–accept the things I cannot change–people places & things. I’ll go a step further & add “courage to change the things i can”– you can only change yourself!! What a tone else thinks says or does is none of your business. Be accountable for your words & actions.
If you’ve got one foot in yesterday (the what if I had done this/that, etch) & the other foot in tomorrow (projecting the future) then, you have pissed all over today.
Practice acceptance. Nobody’s perfect–we can still keep trying.

No button needed here–just faith in my higher power!!
