Beyond Babedom

We're (way) over 40. Deal with it.

I’m Sorry

I’m sorry that it’s raining today. I’m sorry that my husband was late for work. I’m sorry I’m not taller. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.

Why the hell do women apologize for things they didn’t do, have no control over and have no reason to be sorry for?

I don’t know, but I’m really sorry that they do. And I’m really sorry to be the one to tell you that being sorry doesn’t a) make you a better person or b) make people like you more. Actually, it’s kind of pathetic. But it’s one more way women – especially women over 40 – spend half their time: apologizing. Hey, we didn’t screw up the economy, but you don’t hear those hedge fund managers asking for forgiveness. Hell, no. They’re still lobbying Congress to make sure they continue to only pay 15% in income taxes on their billions.

Do you hear any world leader – again, mostly male – apologizing for starting a war? Heck, no. George HW Bush actually had a foreign airliner shot from the sky – by mistake – and he refused to apologize. Too unmanly, I guess. And did people like him less? Sure, maybe some did, but it didn’t hurt his son’s chance of getting elected.

Apologizing – especially for something you didn’t have any control over – is for women. We own it. So, I’m sorry. You’re just going to have to live with it.

As long as I can remember, it started with my Mother and my Aunt saying to me. (Say your sorry) for everything that I did that was wrong or not natural. I had to say I was sorry so much that even today I still say it. I have great people that I work with, that understand. They are trying to help me reverse the spell as they call it. Every time I say I’m sorry, they say, what are you sorry for? I don’t know I explain. I quess I’m not sorry for anything.. It is working. I thank my friend for helping me. I’m not sorry any more…

Yes, all too often women are saying they are sorry for which they should not. We, as men should be apologizing for the things that we really do! I think deep down we now it’s the right thing to do but don’t because it is seen as a weakness. But being a man is knowing what is the right thing to do and say. We are out there.
